She Hates Me

Sam says to me, “You have to explain all this to her. You guys must be really close. She’ll understand when she hears it from her twin.”

I take a big swig of whisky, looking back at Toronto, which is a lot closer now, close enough that I can distinguish the buildings in the skyline. “I haven’t spoken to Claire in three years, not since I left for out West. I haven’t spoken to her since she graduated high school. I graduated a year early, took off immediately and didn’t call home for a year. I left her with my parents. Alone. And I have a feeling she hates me for it.”
